The New Vision (Uganda) - August 16, 2001
Bellamy flew to Uganda on Tuesday evening for the launch of the global Girl's Education Movement. She launched the programme at the Kampala International Conference Centre (ICC) yesterday.
She visited the AIDS Widows Orphans Family Support(AWOFS) at Nsambya that supports over 1500 children.
She was accompanied by the UNICEF Country Representative, Michel Sidibe. She also a visited a family of orphans at Seguku along Entebbe Road.
The family of 13 children is headed by Miria Nakyanzi, 19. Willbroad Ngombi, a social worker, said AWOFS is working with 300 families with over 1500 children to address the challenges of HIV/AIDS.
Ngombi said 400 children attending their paediatric clinic are infected with HIV/AIDS.
AWOFS supports 25 child headed families affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. AWOF was founded in March 1991 by Father Stephen Collins to alleviate the social and economic impact of AIDS on affected families.
The Programme started off by giving grants for small family projects and sponsoring orphans in well established vocational schools to acquire skills. The organisation has constructed two vocational schools at Nsambya and another at Mutundwe sub-county headquarters. It operates a loan system offering credit facilities to HIV/AIDS affected households. Its mission is to support families to enable orphans to remain AIDS free.
