Norway to Help AIDS Orphans

The New Vision (Uganda) - August 15, 2001

The Norwegian government is to establish a special programme for AIDS orphans in Uganda, visiting Norwegian minister of international development Anne Christine Sydnes has said, reports Kezio D. Musoke.

She told President Yoweri Museveni yesterday that the Norwegian government is interested in monitoring regional conflicts. Sydnes said this is because most of the resources given as aid to fight poverty and AIDS-related problems are spent in the conflicts.

She said Norway as a member of the UN Security Council would play a significant role in conflict prevention and resolution in the region, which has been a major hindrance to development in Uganda.

Sydnes and the her delegation which included the Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stalsett, met Museveni at State House Nakasero and discussed other issues related to enhancing Norwegian and Ugandan cooperation and trade. She was accompanied by the Norwegian ambassador to Uganda, Arild Oyen.
