HIV Vaccine Awareness Day

Twenty-five years ago this month, researchers uncovered the virus that causes AIDS. Since then, more than 60 million people have been infected with HIV and last year, 2.1 million people died of AIDS. Although progress has been made in delivering lifesaving treatments and identifying effective prevention strategies, finding new methods of HIV prevention, including a vaccine, remain extremely important.

Historically, it has taken decades to find effective vaccines to combat infectious diseases. Although the HIV vaccine research field has experienced disappointing results in the past year, NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., commemorates HIV Vaccine Awareness Day on May 18, 2008, by thanking volunteers and the scientific and health communities for participating in this vital research and renewing a commitment to finding a safe and effective HIV vaccine that will end the scourge of AIDS.
