Statement of Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases National Institutes of Health On the Death of Dr. Lee Jong-Wook Director-General of the World Health Organization

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health - May 24, 2006

On behalf of the staff of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, I would like to express deep sorrow for the loss of Dr. Lee Jong-Wook, a valued colleague and tireless crusader for the improvement of global health. Dr. Lee dedicated his life to bettering the health and well-being of millions of people throughout the world, leading efforts to eradicate polio, to offer universal access to drugs to treat tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and to prepare the world for the possibility of pandemic influenza.

Dr. Lee was a highly respected and admired public health expert, a compassionate human being, and a good friend. It was a pleasure to have known and worked with him. Together with the entire NIAID community, we extend our sincere condolences to Dr. Lee's family and his colleagues at the WHO and throughout the world.

Dr. Fauci is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
