HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) - February 1, 2008
Alexandria, VA -- (February 1, 2008) -- The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) is now accepting applications for its second annual Minority Clinical Fellowship. The one-year fellowship enables under-represented minority post-residency physicians to gain HIV clinical experience.
Two Fellowships will be awarded to African-American and Latino applicants who have demonstrated interest in HIV medicine. Applicants must be legal residents of the U.S. and demonstrate intent to establish their practice in areas of the country with large minority populations.
"With minority communities among the hardest hit by HIV and AIDS, this fellowship provides rising physicians with an exceptional opportunity to be on the front lines of HIV care and treatment and make a tremendous impact in treating patients," said Christine B. Lubinski, executive director of HIVMA.
Applicants should have completed their residencies prior to the start of the Fellowship, or be in the first five years of medical practice. Candidates must also identify an HIV clinical program within an academic institution where most of their time will be spent engaged in HIV clinical care. Sponsoring institutions must possess a clinical setting with a large HIV minority patient population.
Winners will receive Fellowships of $60,000 through their sponsoring institutions, a one-year membership to HIVMA and free registration and travel support for the IDSA Annual Meeting, where fellowship winners are announced. Funding begins in July 2008. Mentors, who must be HIVMA members, will also receive funding support.
Last year's Fellowship recipients were Aimalohi A. Ahonkhai, MD, Loida E. Bonney, MD, MPH, April Soto, MD and Jose F. Tiburcio, MD. Supporters of the Fellowships include GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Abbott Laboratories, Gilead Sciences, Bristol Myers-Squibb and Tibotec.
