Powers, who retired from her job in June, was to receive the Broward World AIDS Day 2007 Lifetime of Service award on Nov. 30.
After winning the award, Powers learned she had terminal bone cancer and probably wouldn't live until World AIDS Day. The local committee visited her at The Villa hospice on Oct. 26 and gave her a plaque.
Powers is profiled on Page 1E of Saturday's Tropical Life. The section was printed early Friday before her death.
When Powers' health began to decline on Wednesday, MiamiHerald.com posted the profile.
"She read it and she loved it. She was very grateful," said Powers' son, Robert Powers Jr., vice president of the MiMo Biscayne Association in Miami. 'She said, 'Oh, it's a nice long article.' She still couldn't believe that she was so well-received."
Many commented online about Powers after reading her interview.
"Now this woman is what I consider a true hero. How fortunate all of South Florida has been, not just any one community, or even the HIV\AIDS community, but all of us, to have had this highly evolved being with us. . . . Thank you Barbara Powers," wrote Phill Baker of Fort Lauderdale.
Powers is also survived by husband Robert Sr. and daughters Cay Perr Fulop of Asheville, N.C., and Annmarie Fletcher of Fort Lauderdale. Funeral arrangements are pending.
