The National Conference on Latinos and AIDS kicks off today at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa, 4833 Collins Ave.
The conference aims to reinvigorate the national discourse on the AIDS epidemic among Hispanics. It features a keynote speech at 10:30 a.m. by actress and longtime AIDS activist Rosie Perez.
"Why am I here? The fight is not over," said Perez in a statement. "It's important for us to look out for each other, especially when it comes to our own."
Primary care providers, doctors, nurses, government researchers and leaders of community-based AIDS service organizations will address transmission rates and prevention, as well as the impact of federal and state policy on their work.
With the second-highest AIDS case rate in the nation, Hispanics contract AIDS at a rate that is 3 1/2 times higher than whites. Of the 1.2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, 200,000 are Hispanic.
