HIV awareness day is Wednesday: Local programs are planned to mark this year's National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Miami Herald - February 4, 2007

A series of activities has been planned to mark National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is observed each year on Feb. 7 as an effort to encourage African Americans to get educated, tested, treated and involved with the deadly disease.

"National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a remarkable effort that was founded in 2001 to increase participation and support for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment among African Americans through a national community mobilization initiative," said Steven Davis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a member of the NBHAAD National Steering Committee. "We encourage everyone to get involved."

Nationally, several celebrities and political figures have agreed to serve as spokespersons for the day. It is directed, planned and organized by the Strategic Leadership Council that partners with the CDC to mobilize communities and address specific issues regarding local epidemics and the best practices to influence the course of HIV in black communities across the country.

Locally, the observance began Friday with the actress Sheryl Lee Ralph performing her one-woman play Sometimes I Cry at Florida Memorial College.

Other events include:

* Silence is Death community march, campaign presentation and town hall meeting, Wednesday, NFL YET Center, 7090 NW 22nd Ave. Participants will wear red T-shirts for the march that will begin at 10 a.m. from the center and end at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Caleb Center, 5400 NW 22nd Ave.

The presentation, luncheon and town hall meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Caleb Center and will be a call to action to address the impact of HIV/AIDS on the black communities in Miami-Dade. For more information, call Zaida Castillo or Kwesi Rose, 305-470-6999.

* Red Ribbon motorcycle ride, Feb. 18, starting at Miami Dade College's North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Ave., parking lot No. 18, and ending at El Palacio Hotel, 16805 NW 12th Ave., Miami Gardens. The cost to enter is $10 per motorcycle. For more information, call Metris Batts, 305-696-0738 ext. 202.
