Finally, some recognition

Miami Herald - March 22, 2006
Steve Rothaus

Miami AIDS activist Steven Alicea, who lived in 15 foster homes by the time he was 15 years old, has gone national -- he's one of "20 teens who will change the world," according to Teen People magazine.

Alicea, 19, just got back from New York where he and the others attended a March 10 luncheon co-hosted by Nick Lachey and Paula Abdul.

"Wow, it was amazing. The other teens and what they've done -- it really shocked me," said Alicea, who attends Miami Dade College and works part-time at Care Resource, Florida's largest AIDS service agency.

The 20 winners each received $1,000 scholarships from L'Oreal Paris and are featured in April's Teen People.

Alicea spent his early teen years moving from one foster home to another, kicked out because he is gay. He won his award for counseling other young people about HIV and AIDS, according to Terry DeCarlo, Care Resource's spokesman.

"He's doing outreach. Condom distribution at the clubs, fliers about prevention, condom use. He's out there telling people to be safe, that AIDS isn't over," DeCarlo said. "He's their age and is able to talk their language."
