MOVERS - Minorities Overcoming the Virus through Education, Responsibility, and Spirituality -- has appointed the Rev. Arthur Gatlin as its new executive director.
Gatlin is director of Pastoral Care for Black Church In Action.
A MOVERS statement said the board of director tapped him as executive director because of 'his wisdom, connection to the people and `let's get it done' attitude."
MOVERS is a minority, not-for profit community-based organization founded by Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Liberty City.
Gatlin's appointment marks the start of a new approach by MOVERS to fulfilling its mission of providing a holistic approach to HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention, the statement said.
The organization, founded in 1989, has renewed its commitment to help the black community eradicate the deadly disease through Gatlin's appointment, the statement said.
Gatlin has led the BCIA program for the past year and has been able to galvanize churches across the state to take a look at their approach to dealing with HIV/AIDS.
"Many churches were inadvertently turning people infected with the virus away because they had no outreach ministry," Gatlin said in the statement.
"When someone is infected with the virus, they do not want to be stigmatized and are reluctant to approach a church they are not sure will welcome them," he said.
MOVERS provides technical assistance and capacity building instruction to assist churches with setting up programs that educate and serve those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Besides case management and pastoral care services, the group provides affordable housing, testing, medical treatment and many other forms of assistance to those living with the disease.
