Needy residents get health checkups

Miami Herald - May 19, 2005

Residents of four trailer parks in Melrose got a visit from a health team.

In an attempt to bring much needed health, medical and social services to the needy, Team Metro Melrose and Borinquen Health Care Center visited four Melrose-area trailer parks during the first week of May as part of the national observance of "Cover the Uninsured Week."

In coordination with Team Metro Melrose, the Team Metro Government on the Go Bus and Borinquen's Mobile Medical Unit set up camp at the Royal Duke Trailer Park, Paradise Trailer Park, Riverpark Trailers and All-Star Trailer Park throughout the week, providing government information and services, as well as medical services such as testing for hepatitis, HIV, pregnancy and glucose level, blood pressure checks, hearing exams, and nutrition and exercise information.

Besides medical and health information, Team Metro also provided other services, including the helping with applications for passports and sale of baby stroller parking permits, dog tags, transit bus and rail passes and tokens.

The Miami-Dade County Health Department, Miami-Dade County Transit, Regis House, the Deaf Bureau, Dynamic CDC and the March of Dimes also participated in the free health fairs.

The outreach effort covered more than 150 residents, according to a statement from Team Metro Melrose.
