Actress, choreographer and producer Rosie Perez will serve as grand marshal for Sunday's 17th annual AIDS Walk Miami -- Run, Walk, Blade for the cure, to raise money to provide free services for more than 6,000 adults and children battling HIV.
Registration and opening ceremonies for the 3.1-mile walk begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Dr. The walk begins at 9 a.m.
There is no fee to join, but participants are asked to contribute at least $25 to the cause.
Last-minute registrations are welcomed, said Chip Arndt, spokesman for walk sponsor Care Resource, a provider of services, support and education for AIDS/HIV patients and prevention of the spread of the disease.
"Just show up with 25 bucks and you can go," Arndt said.
More than 1,000 runners, walkers and in-line skaters have already registered, and some 2,000 in all are anticipated, he said. Last year's event raised more than $300,000, Arndt said.
Rosie Perez began her career as a Soul Train dancer in 1971, later working as a choreographer for the Fly Girls on Fox TV's In Living Color.
She received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress in the movie Fearless (1993), has produced two HBO specials, and has performed on Broadway.
Perez joins a list of AIDS Walk grand marshals that includes Gloria and Emilio Est fan, Sylvester Stallone, Cindy Crawford, Cristina Saralegui and Rosie O'Donnell.
WSVN-Fox 7 news anchor Craig Stevens will reprise his role as co-master of ceremonies during the opening and closing activities, along with "Mr. Miami Beach" Michael Aller, tourism and convention director for the city.
