The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and will cover six blocks from Northeast 42nd Street to Northeast 48th Street between North Miami Avenue and Northeast Second Avenue, just north of the Design District. At least 30 houses will be participating, said Buena Vista East resident Lisa Silvera.
"This is our way of saying come on over to our house and meet us," she said. "The idea is for us to share our beautiful historic district and make a difference at the same time."
Signs and balloons will lead patrons to the area, where they can browse from sale to sale and tour the historic block. The architecture and landscaping, Silvera said, is reminiscent of old Miami.
Items for sale range from clothes to furniture to homemade crafts. There will be music and food. And all sale participants will collect new unwrapped toys to fill an "Ultimate Toy Box," which will be donated to The Green Family Foundation Holiday Toy Drive. The nonprofit organization provides HIV/AIDS prevention and education, access to the arts, youth education, homeless assistance, disaster relief and community outreach throughout South Florida.
"The energy fueling this sale is based on charity," Silvera said. "Each person participating will donate whatever they can. One way or another, whether it be from selling items or toy donations, our goal is to do what we can to help others."
Silvera said the association plans to donate to charities including Douglas Gardens Community Mental Health Center, Red Cross and various Haitian community organizations. "Our goal is to collect as many toys as we possible," she said. "We wanted to bring the biggest carful of toys and flood the Green Family Foundation with donations. Everything after that is gravy."
