"From 1999-2002 in the 29 U.S. states with long-standing reporting, HIV diagnoses among Hispanics increased 26 percent," Carmona said. "Hispanics are more than three times as likely as whites to be diagnosed with AIDS, and AIDS is currently the third leading cause of death for Hispanics ages 35-44."
In Miami-Dade County, Hispanics make up 61 percent of the population and 33 percent of AIDS cases, the Miami-Dade Health Department said.
Carmona said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will produce five radio spots and two television spots promoting testing and prevention.
He said they will publicize the National Hispanic HIV hot line, 800-344-7432, and the website of HHS' Office of Minority Health at www.omhrc.gov.
