Meek to speak about health

U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, and three other members of Congress will attend a summit at Miami Dade College that will discuss racial and ethnic disparities in health issues relating to tobacco, obesity, HIV/AIDS and immigrants.

Summit panels will meet in Building 3 of the Champan Center of MDC's Wolfson Campus, 245 NE Fourth St. in downtown Miami.

Panels are: Tobacco's Uneven Toll on Minorities, 9 to 9:45 a.m.; Obesity and Its Consequences, 10 to 10:45 a.m.; Immigrant Health, 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.; and HIV/AIDS, noon to 2 p.m.

Accompanying Meek in the discussions will be U.S. Rep. Donna M. Christensen, chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust, who is U.S. Virgin Islands delegate to Congress; U.S. Rep. Hilda Solis, chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Health Task Force who represents the 32nd Congressional District of California; and U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, who represents the 15th Congressional District of California.

Panelists include Dr. Alma Adams, vice chairwoman of the American Legacy Foundation; Dr. Forest Harper, vice president of Share Card Program, Share Card Administration, Pfizer; and Barbara Krimgold, director of Kellogg Programs, Center for the Advancement of Health.

The American Legacy Foundation, Pfizer and Kellogg Men's Health Initiative are sponsors.

Representatives from the National African American Tobacco Prevention Network, Nova Southeastern University, Miami Dade College's Medical Center Campus, Philippine American Federation of South Florida, Overtown Civic Partnership and Design Center, and Community Voices of Miami will also participate.
