The neighborhood outreach teams will begin gathering in Coconut Grove at 8:30 a.m., and the drive will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Belafonte Tacolcy Center, in Model City -- one of the neighborhoods with the highest incidence of HIV and AIDS in the United States, according to a statement from the mayor's office.
According to the statement, the latest Miami-Dade Health Department HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report, made in August, shows there are 27,174 cases of AIDS in Miami-Dade County. The racial and ethnic breakdown in the report shows that 51 percent of the AIDS cases and 54 percent of the reported HIV cases are black or African-American.
The greatest concentration of AIDS cases is in the city of Miami and its immediate surroundings, the report says.
The statement said state Rep. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, D-Miami, will join Diaz, city commissioners, staff from the city's Department of Community Development and Miami-Dade Health Department and city and high school student volunteers for the outreach Saturday.
Those interested in being volunteers should contact Samaki Variety at 305-250-5327.
