Auction seeks cure for AIDS

Miami Herald - Tuesday August 13, 2002

Ostensibly, they came out to the European Guest House in South Beach to bid on paintings.

But the men and women who attended the fundraiser for the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce were more interested in the live pop concert featuring local musicians J.C. Salih and TMarie.

CHARITY SUPPORT

Salih, who describes his sound as "mystic pop with a spiritualist undertone," said he uses his CD profits to pay for the funerals of HIV-positive children.

And the 14-year-old TMarie supports a variety of charities, including United Fund for AIDS and Miami Children's Hospital.

Emcee Amy Rivers shouted to the crowd, "We need a cure, and we're going to get it!"

Jim Konschnik, the chamber's executive director, said the group hosts about six fundraisers a year. "We've only been around for a few years," he said, "but we are 225 members strong."

SECOND MONDAYS

The European Guest House, 721 Michigan Ave. in Miami Beach, hosts auctions for different nonprofits on the second Monday of each month, owner Carlos Mejias said.

CHAGALL WORKS

Monday night's event featured the surrealism and Florida landscapes of native Michele Richard Kennedy. Three works by Marc Chagall were also available, for minimum bids of $1,200 to $1,900.

However, by 9 p.m., when most of the two dozen guests were leaving, no bids had been placed, Konschnik said.

Not to worry: Even though the artwork wasn't selling, the chamber didn't come up empty-handed. The guests who came to schmooze paid a $10 cover, with proceeds going to the chamber.
