A new spin on White Party

Miami Herald - Tuesday August 13, 2002
Howard Cohen, hcohen@herald.com

There are some things we just expect. Tuesday follows Monday, Michael Jackson will never cut another Thriller . . . and David Knapp will be the White Party DJ.

But not at this year's soiree on Dec. 1. South Florida DJ Monty Q will be spinning the main party. Knapp will work the decks at the fledgling Muscle Beach party portion of White Party's week of events on Nov. 30.

Knapp has been a fixture at the annual White Party at Vizcaya for a decade. He won't be playing the main event because the organization that puts on White Party -- Care Resource, an HIV/AIDS service group -- adores him. So why pull him from the main stage?

The Vizcaya event has a cap on attendance. Muscle Beach doesn't. And that's where Knapp's name is valuable.

"Where we have the opportunity to grow is the 12th Street Muscle Beach event," says Ruth Hamilton, Care Resource's development manager. "There's a revenue opportunity there."

Individual White Party tickets go on sale for $150 on Sept. 1.

Miami-Dade and Broward residents can buy three-event passes for $150 at www.whiteparty.com or by calling 305-667-9296, ext. 42.
