The Alexis de Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy will be given to Batchelor tonight at a private reception hosted by Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez.
Batchelor has been crusading for children since 1990 when he created the foundation with a mission to provide hope to families whose children are living with asthma, cystic fibrosis, HIV/AIDS, cancer and head injuries. Batchelor's son, Falcon, died of cystic fibrosis in 1990 at age 35.
In 1999, Batchelor's foundation contributed $1 million toward the creation of a United Way Success-By-6 program to build an early childhood learning and teaching center. It is expected to open in 2003.
Other foundation contributions include $10 million toward the establishment of the Batchelor Children's Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, which opened earlier this year.
In addition to children's causes, Metrozoo, the Miami Museum of Science and the Community Partnership for the Homeless have received funds from the foundation.
The award is given annually by the United Way to an individual who has provided outstanding service as a volunteer and sustained philanthropy, inspiration and leadership.
