EDITORIAL: Publix saves AIDS victims' defrosting food

Miami Herald - Friday, July 31, 1998

The Food For Life Network provides groceries and meals to more than 600 people in Miami-Dade County who are living with AIDS.

When we opened our doors on July 22, we discovered a nightmare: The electricity was off due to a severe storm during the night. Our walk-in freezer, containing more than $5,000 worth of frozen dinners and meats, was defrosting.

We took immediate action. After one phone call to the Publix district manager's office, a donated 44-foot refrigerator truck came within the hour. Our staff and community volunteers loaded the frozen food into the truck. It was left in our parking lot until the power returned at night.

Because of Publix's quick response, compassion, and understanding, our HIV/AIDS clients were fed, and we didn't lose one item from our freezer. It's heart-warming to see a major corporation come through for its neighbors in an emergency.

Our hats are off to Publix. Berne Teeple Director of Development, Food For Life Network Miami
