CAresource, a not-for-profit organization that helps those with HIV and AIDS, is hosting the second annual Toast Toward a Cure, two events aimed at raising money for research, treatment and education.
On July 1, CAresource -- Community AIDS Resource -- was formed from the merger of two AIDS service providers, the service-based Health Crisis Network and the research-based Community Research Initiative of South Florida.
The first "toast" happened in Broward on Monday. The next event is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Red Square, 411 Washington Ave. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
"Basically, for $35 you can get all of the food and drink you can scarf down in two and a half hours," said Michael Kaiser, CAresource director of corporate and foundation development. "This is a food and beverage sampling event where we get local restaurants and food purveyors to provide one or two specialty dishes along with wine distributors like ABC Spirits and Bacardi. Stu Grant from Love 94 (WLVE-FM) will be there to play jazz and there will be door prizes. This is our way to lighten up the summer."
Last year, Toast Toward a Cure was held in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, where the events attracted about 700 people and raised more than $25,000 for AIDS research.
This year CAresource has already received $20,000 total from the event's presenting sponsors -- Life Benefit Services and Roxane Laboratories.
"We're hoping to attract over 500 people at both events and to at least raise $30,000," said Kaiser. "The funds from the event will go toward stimulating AIDS awareness, HIV risk reduction, to benefit AIDS research and clinical research trials -- to come up with a cure."
