Test Detects HIV, Without Needles

Miami Herald (MH) - Thursday, April 16, 1998
Herald Staff

Health Crisis Network is now offering a simple, fast way to test for HIV.

HCN now has OraSure, a collection pad that is placed between the lower cheek and gum and will detect the presence of HIV antibodies by collecting a sample of oral mucosal transduate.

HCN officials stress that OraSure is not a saliva test, since HIV can not be transmitted through saliva. HCN is the only agency in South Florida now offering this method.

OraSure, along with standard HIV testing, is now available from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at 21st Street and Collins Avenue; from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at 11th Street and Washington Avenue, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at 5050 Biscayne Blvd.

For more information, call 751-7775.
