The Health Council of South Florida will host a town hall meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Square Community Center, 6304 NW 14th Ave., to gather information about what treatment and care are needed in the area.
The meeting is being held on behalf of the county's HIV Health Services Planning Council. Refreshments will be served.
For more information, call Jeffrey Wilkinson at the Health Council of South Florida at 263-9020.
The Liberty City Health Services Center will continue to spread the sobering message of World AIDS Day by hosting an Intervention and Prevention Educational AIDS Fair next weekend.
The fair, which will feature HOT 105 (WHQT-105 FM) radio personality Jill Tracey, features live bands and more than 60 health agencies. Various groups will provide free HIV tests and provide participants with gift packages of condoms and brochures. Also, volunteers will conduct free blood pressure and diabetes screenings.
Participants will also get demonstrations on how to properly use condoms.
"We have a big battle here and this is just the beginning," said Gretchen Jones, outreach worker at the health services center. "We're trying to find creative ways to inform the residents of Liberty City."
Although blacks make up 14 percent of Florida's population, they represent more than 40 percent of the AIDS cases in the state. Blacks make up 48 percent of reported cases in the county.
The fair will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the African Square Park, 1466 NW 62nd St. The clinic is a satellite office of the county's Public Health Trust.
