Now, South Shore Hospital is honoring him for it.
The board of directors at South Shore, 600 Alton Rd., voted unanimously Tuesday to name its Model Community AIDS Program after Evans, who died Monday of a heart attack. The announcement was made during his funeral at the Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 1920 Alton Rd.
"Al was a one-man machine," said Gerald Schwartz, executive vice president of the board of trustees at South Shore. "He was a full-time volunteer who made the program work through his creativeness and dynamic leadership. That's what made him stand out, not only in his fight against AIDS, but in the designer world as well."
Besides being the president and founder of the AIDS foundation, Evans was a renowned interior designer who worked on the Alexander Hotel.
Marshall Berkson, president and chairman of the board of directors at South Shore, proposed the tribute to board members, who adopted it right away.
"It's self-evident that he richly deserved this because he was the straw that stirred the drink. He had an amazing ability to attract people from such varied walks of life to support this cause," Berkson said.
Many of those people he attracted were on hand Tuesday to deliver eulogies, including Michael Aller of the city of Miami Beach, Commissioner David Pearlson, flutist Nestor Torres, sports commentator Jimmy Cefalo and Marcy Lefton and Frosene Sonderling, active supporters of the United Foundation for AIDS. Executive directors William Zubkoff and Joyce Galbet also attended the funeral, along with about 300 others.
The Al Evans Model Community AIDS Program is funded by the AIDS foundation, which was founded by Evans nearly five years ago. The program caters to patients infected with the AIDS virus who wish to seek counseling, HIV screening and therapy.
