AIDS Walk Takes Step to Miami Organizers: Move Will Make It Easier

Hoping to raise a million dollars this time out, the Health Crisis Network has changed the location of its annual AIDS Walk from South Beach to downtown Miami.

The move, organizers say, will offer better parking and accessibility, especially for those who will be able to use the People Mover.

AIDS Walk Miami '98 will take place Feb. 22 in Bayfront Park. Participants will start the 10K walk at the park and then take Brickell Avenue through downtown.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the walk, HCN also has opened a special AIDS Walk Miami office, which will coordinate, recruit and pre-register walkers in an effort to reach the million dollar mark.

"This year's AIDS Walk should be the best organized, best run and the most successful fundraiser in our history, thanks to our volunteers and the funds raised by 25,000 walkers," said Kevin Burns, event manager of the walk.

The office, at 6445 NE Seventh Ave., will be open through March 1. It will provide information, tips and fundraiser kits to the walk teams as well as follow-up phone calls to team captains.

Last year's walk raised $500,000 with the help of corporate sponsors such as Carnival Cruise Lines, and teams sponsored by schools, individuals, families and friends.

HCN has various programs stressing prevention, education and support to individuals and families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Money raised by the walk helps support HCN in its effort to fight the disease.

"The good news is that protease inhibitors or `drug cocktails' have improved the quality of life for many," said Keith Cromely, director of development at HCN. "The bad news is that more people than ever are and continue to be infected with HIV."

The fund-raising for HCN begins the week of Thanksgiving, otherwise known as White Party Week.

The event is a week-long series of fundraisers including a concert by Patti Labelle and a dinner at the Delano's Blue Door Restaurant, hosted by Madonna.

"We need people to realize that today more than ever, we need their continuous support and awareness in the fight against AIDS and HIV," Cromely said. "The spread of AIDS is not diminishing, but increasing. Please come on out and walk."
