The Dade Community Foundation awarded $75,500 in grant money last week to several AIDS prevention education programs and service agencies for people living with HIV and AIDS.

The grants were funded by the Foundation's South Florida Community AIDS Partnership, Dade County's largest source of private funding for HIV/AIDS prevention. Established in 1990, the Partnership has made 104 grants worth $860,911 to nonprofit organizations in Dade County.

The largest grant awarded was to the Health Crisis Network, Inc., to fund its "United Houses Outreach Project" which trains young gay and bisexual men as peer educators in prevention outreach activities.

"The project that HCN is working on is a potentially high-impact program," said Charisse Grant, program director for the Foundation. "The target group represents one of the highest risk groups in Miami."

Among the other agencies that will receive money are:

The Community Alliance Against AIDS, where the money will be used to expand HIV screening and prevention at the University of Miami's AIDS Clinical Research Unit.

The Family Counseling Service of Greater Miami, which is launching a new program that will bring AIDS educators in to provide workshops for parents on talking to their kids about AIDS and sexuality.

The HIV Education and Law Project (H.E.L.P.), an organization that offers free legal assistance to poor people who live with HIV and AIDS.

"Without this money, we would have had to shut down -- this [grant] is sustaining us." said Karen Vogel of H.E.L.P.
