Hispanic AIDS Plays Postponed for Lack of Funds

Hialeah's first Hispanic AIDS Theater, a showcase of three Spanish-language plays with AIDS- or HIV-related themes, will be postponed until at least July.

Organizers blame a lack of funding for the delay of the six-day production, which benefits the Latin American AIDS Coalition.

"Some money that was earmarked for the production didn't come through," said Marcos Miranda, an organizer. He said the group is lobbying the city of Hialeah for funds to save the showcase.

Miranda and Julie Degrandy, both local playwrights, decided in March to stage a benefit to showcase their plays and to bring greater awareness about the disease to the community. They were prompted in part by the reluctance of Hispanic media to publicize the illness.

About 20 local actors, other playwrights, directors and critics joined their effort. After several meetings, the group decided to put on six days of theater to be held at Miami TV Production, a television studio located at 7395 W. 19th Ct.

Although Hispanics make up about 10 percent of the nation's population, they account for 19 percent of AIDS cases, according to the National Council of La Raza, a Washington-based federation of Hispanic activist groups.

Miranda said the show, though delayed, will still go on.

"I think it's definitely going to happen," he said.

Tickets will cost $12, or $50 for the gala premieres. The Latin American coalition was chosen to benefit because it receives no government funding.
