At the end of April, the school at 120 NE 59th St., is scheduled to open a clinic to provide the 1,035 students there with an array of health services that will include mental counseling.
The addition of a health clinic will complete Toussaint's needs to become a full-service school. Presently, 23 Dade County Schools are designated as full-service facilities, with community education and recreational activities for students.
Presently, seven Dade schools have health clinics staffed by a doctor and nurse practitioner during school hours.
"So many of our children have medical needs, and if we can prevent them from having health problems, then that will be a blessing for the children and their parents who have busy schedules," said Principal Ruthie Williams.
The clinic, which will be located in a portable on campus, cost $200,000. Toussaint received a state grant to set up the clinic with equipment, furniture and medical supplies.
The first week of April, the Center for Haitian Studies Executive Director Larry Pierre will open the Harrington Community Health Center -- named after the late William Harrington.
The former Jackson Memorial Hospital hematologist had fought on behalf of Haitians who were prohibited from giving blood by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1990.
The clinic will be headed by a Haitian-American doctor, Judith Cauvin. The University of Miami's health education center gave the Haitian studies center a $60,000 grant to start up the clinic that will provide services to any Little Haiti resident.
In 1993 and 1994, the center had a clinic to serve clients who were HIV positive, but funds to operate that clinic ran dry. This time, services will be offered to everyone in the community.
"There are people out there who wait till they have major symptoms before they go see a doctor. We hope to prevent that," Pierre said. "Plus, we will be culturally sensitive, and there won't be a language barrier at our clinic."
