Thousands Ready to Stroll South Beach for Good Cause

Thousands will put on their walking shoes Sunday for the ninth annual AIDS WALK Miami in Miami Beach.

Parking will be available at Watson Island, off Interstate 395, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Shuttle buses will take walkers to and from South Pointe Park, 1 Washington Ave., for $1 a person. South Beach residents are encouraged to walk, bike, skate or take a taxi to South Pointe to avoid a parking crunch. No parking will be allowed at the park.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. at South Pointe Park. Opening ceremonies start at 9 a.m., with two actors from the popular TV show ER -- Mike Genovese and Ellen Crawford -- and Calvin Klein model-actor Antonio Sabato Jr. there to promote the event.

From the park, walkers will take the first steps of the 4.2-mile walk, which takes them on a zig-zagging tour of South Beach. Volunteers will walk past sidewalk cafes along Ocean Drive and find themselves on newly renovated Lincoln Road, where they will turn around to head back to the park.

Walkers can bring dogs, but are reminded to bring extra water for the animals.

Every year, walkers raise money for Health Crisis Network, a primary HIV/AIDS service provider in South Florida. This year's goal is $600,000.

Since the fund-raiser began in 1989, up to 25,000 walkers have taken steps to raise money for thousands of Americans living with AIDS.
