TEXT: For a high school graphic arts class, Carrie Lobacz was given this assignment: Draw a poster based on the theme, "Winning the Fight Against AIDS."

While classmates turned to red ribbons and other familiar symbols, Carrie, a 17-year-old senior at Plantation High School, came up with something different. For her "AIDS vs. Everybody" poster, she drew stylized faces -- friends, teachers, people she knows.

"I was just trying to think of a unique idea. That just came to me," said Carrie, who lives in Sunrise.

Her artwork caught the judges' attention in a contest sponsored by the organizers of local World AIDS Day events. Carrie's work has been transformed into a billboard near the Design Center of the Americas in Dania.

"It's a simple design," said Carrie, whose poster was selected from more than 50 entries. "I just thought of it as another assignment."

The award took Carrie by surprise: "I never win anything."

The art contest was one of the first events for World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Events surrounding the worldwide celebration start in Broward this month, and will continue through Dec. 3.

"Our mission is to educate and unite the community in the fight against AIDS," said Michael Goodman, a spokesman for the event.

World AIDS Day was declared by the World Health Organization to remember those who have died from the illness -- and to honor those who are working to find a cure. Local communities create their own events to mark the day. One of the main events in Broward will be Saturday's Walk/Run for Life, sponsored in part by the North Broward Hospital District. The five-kilometer run will be held at Fort Lauderdale's Esplanade Park, and will feature kids' activities and appearances by Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. KC, from the 1970s pop group KC and the Sunshine Band, will lead the walkers.

In addition, quilt panels made by those who have lost loved ones to AIDS will be dedicated at a candlelight memorial service Dec. 1 at the Design Center.

All of the money raised from the events will go to the Broward Community Foundation, which will distribute it to South Florida organizations that have AIDS or HIV programs. Last year, more than $90,000 was raised.
