This form of therapy -- expressive therapy -- is one of many used to treat 60 children in the United Way's Riccardia Program, which provides individual and group therapy to help children and their families cope with the psychological impact of HIV.
On Saturday, the program received a much-needed $20,000 grant awarded by Sears and the Gloria Estefan Foundation that will help enroll 15 children on the program's waiting list and hire an additional therapist.
"There will always be a waiting list, but this helps a great deal," said Damian Pardo, president of the board of directors of Health Crisis Network, the United Way agency that runs the Riccardia Program. "This donation sets a great example for the corporate and philanthropic community of how one donation can impact teenagers and children affected by HIV."
The grant is part of a national $1 million multicultural program called OYE!, coordinated by the United Way of America and local United Ways across America. Through OYE!, the Gloria Estefan Foundation has donated money to 34 United Way programs nationwide, representing the 34 cities Estefan visited during her Evolution Tour.
