$1 Million Grant Will Help Homeless

The Miami Herald, Inc.; Friday, September 27, 1996

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a three-year grant totaling $1.09 million to a local nonprofit agency to provide services for homeless people with AIDS.

Housing and Services of South Florida, an affiliate of Housing Services, Inc. of New York City, will use the money to fund efforts with Camillus Health Concerns and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Claire Haaga, president of HSI in New York, said part of the money will help fund the Camillus "Safe Street Program," which provides medical outreach for homeless people with AIDS or who are HIV positive.

The money will also fund a staff planner position at Jackson Memorial Hospital to provide acute AIDS patients who are being discharged with information on outside agencies that provide support services.

Housing and Services of South Florida will also use the money to create a housing coordinator position on their staff to improve communication among the various agencies serving the homeless, Haaga said.

The grant will also be used to track how 200 homeless people with AIDS are faring in their local efforts to secure housing and other services.

Services for homeless people with AIDS are in short supply in Dade County. Local homeless advocates have estimated that 15 percent or more of the homeless population could be HIV positive.

The grant money was provided through a HUD program, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, that addresses the special housing and service needs of homeless people living with HIV/AIDS. HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros announced grant winners from across the country on Thursday in Washington, D.C.
