Angels in Training, an AIDS and HIV education and prevention program, teaches AIDS prevention, healthy love, positive living and survival skills for those already infected with the HIV virus.
BellSouth provided major underwriting for the workshop and those involved included Don Sadler of BellSouth; Andy Zallman, HIV/AIDS Planning and Management Organization; and Helenita Fernandez and Dr. Jose Hernandez of the Agape Women's Center, a substance abuse rehabilitation organization.
When he was in elementary school, Emmanuel Pimentel was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
Friday, Emmanuel reached Boy Scouting's highest rank, that of Eagle Scout, during a Court of Honor ceremony at Centro Cristiano Fuente de Vida church in West Dade.
Before he joined the Scouts, teachers labeled Emmanuel a problem student, his mother Nelida Cordova told The Herald last August. Scouting changed his outlook and his behavior, Cordova said.
As part of his Eagle Scout project, Emmanuel, 16, a sophomore at Coral Park High School, and 10 other Scouts from Troop 83 teamed up with Sweetwater Elementary School to make identification cards for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The boys worked with the Missing Children Information Clearing House, which allowed between 300 and 400 students to receive the cards, which contain the student's name, date of birth, age, sex, race, hair color, eye color, height, weight, picture and fingerprints.
Scout Master Philip Lecours is pleased with Emmanuel's progress, but not surprised.
"He was motivated by the Scouting program," Lecours said.
Tree planting, songs and croquet are just some of the highlights of an upcoming Miami Centennial Celebration event.
The best part is that it's all free.
Miami Mayor Steve Clark and former Miami mayors will be honored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at the south end of Bayfront Park. They'll oversee a tree planting and accept an original work of art identifying all past mayors and their terms of office. The painting is a collaboration by local artist Mary Ruden and Adam Fullerton.
Following will be the performance of centennial songs and croquet in the park with Marion Hilliard, president of the garden club federation, taking the first whack at a croquet ball.
A Garden Tea Buffet will be available for a $1 ticket, which will give the holder a chance at a prize.
Bob Soper of WFOR Channel 4 television will be the day's master of ceremonies.
A holiday party for more than 1,700 underprivileged and retarded children was a gift before Christmas from the Miami Council 1726 of the Knights of Columbus.
The children were taken to Dodge City in South Dade, where Santa Claus parachuted in. There also were Disney characters, a purple dinosaur and an elf, and the youngsters enjoyed a petting zoo, magic show, kiddie rides and refreshments.
Children hospitalized over the holidays at Jackson Memorial Hospital got a special treat the week before Christmas. The Hearing Research Institute distributed toys to all the youngsters Gifts, games and stuffed animals were donated by the institute, the Kendall Women's Night Tennis League, the Homestead Jewish Center, the Anthony Abraham Foundation and others.
The institute, which offers free infant hearing screening tests, has adopted all pediatric wards at Jackson as part of the hospital's Adopt-A-Floor Program and visits the hospitalized children several times a year.
Members of the Murray Solomon Jewish War Veterans Post 243 of Coral Gables played Santa Claus by giving out toys to all hospitalized children at Miami Children's Hospital before Christmas.
Toys were donated by the post and by children from Temple Judea schools as part of their Toys From Tots To Tots program. Youngsters are encouraged to bring gifts to their classes to give to children at the hospital.
