Council opposes building hospital for AIDS kids

Miami Herald - Saturday, December 16, 1995
April Witt, Herald Staff Writer

The Broward County HIV Health Services Planning Council voted unanimously this week to oppose building a 500-bed hospital and research center in Oakland Park for children with AIDS.

"Adequate services already exist within Broward County for the care and treatment of pediatric AIDS cases," according to a resolution adopted by the council.

"The general trend in current medicine is away from, rather than toward, more hospitalization" for children with AIDS or HIV infection, the resolution said.

A Broward developer, Richard L. Kurtz, has said he wants to raise $120 million to build the Infants' and Childrens' AIDS Research and Treatment Facility on Dixie Highway in Oakland Park. Kurtz has said in the past that the facility would attract top AIDS researchers and sick children from around the country.

But members of the HIV Health Services Planning Council -- an advisory body to county commissioners -- urged hospital proponents not to proceed with the project.

"Ethically, it just doesn't make sense," said Dr. Richard Ames, vice chairman of the council and dental director for the Broward County Public Health Unit.

Most children with AIDS only need to be hospitalized for a day or two during periodic medical crises.
