In a letter to other pastors, the Revs. Arthur Jackson Jr., John F. White, George E. McRae, Marilyn L. Usher and Garry Hoston stressed to their counterparts the importance of teaching HIV/AIDS health education to their parishioners.
"The rate of increase in our community has been disproportionate with other groups in Dade County," said White, pastor of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Overtown.
Although African Americans make up only 19.1 percent of Dade's population, they account for 46.7 percent of all HIV/AIDS cases in the county, White said. African American women are 15 percent more likely to have HIV than white women; and African American children 18 times more likely to have HIV than white children, he said.
White and other pastors leading the effort have invited their counterparts to a breakfast meeting at 8 a.m. Dec. 9 at Greater Bethel A.M.E., 245 NW Eighth St., "to pool our knowledge, wisdom and resources to keep our people alive," White said.
To participate, call the church at 371-9102.
