Monroe County events will take place through the week in schools, churches and at meetings of civic groups.
Many organizations will display red ribbons distributed by the Disease Prevention Center and AIDS Help.
In conjunction with World AIDS Day, this week has been proclaimed AIDS Awareness Week throughout the county.
Highlights include a two-day HIV prevention workshop, a range of interdenominational services, a sunset commemoration at Key West's Simonton Street Beach at 5 p.m. Friday and the lighting of the "Christmas Tree of Hope" at the Pier House in Key West.
Cinema Shores, the Atlantic Shores outdoor movie theater in Key West, will show Living Proof HIV and The Pursuit of Happiness through Thursday, rsday at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the $3 admission will benefit Patchwork in Paradise, the project bringing the Names Quilt to Key West Jan. 25-28.
On the national level, lights at the White House will be dimmed for 15 minutes Friday evening as a symbol of the national commitment in the war on AIDS.
The HIV prevention workshop at Holiday Inn La Concha on Friday and Saturday, to be financed by private nongovernment sources, will feature recognized experts on HIV.
They are Robert Hays and Maria Ekstrand from the University of California at San Francisco Center for AIDS Prevention Studies.
For registration information, call the Disease Prevention Center at 292-6701. Early registration is urged for this free workshop, which will be limited to 100 people.
