AIDS Day: Was Anyone Listening?

Miami Herald; Sunday, December 12, 1993
Herald Staff

Dec. 1 was World AIDS Day across the globe -- a day to remember those who have passed on and a day to bring together support and love for those who are living with the disease. An informative and inspirational program took place at Bayside Park in Miami and was well advertised in advance.

So where were all the supporters? With 10,000 new cases of HIV in Dade County alone, surely there are a few people out there who would like to show their support.

We are a sick community, Dade County. The AIDS crisis is not going to go away by itself. We have to support those with HIV and AIDS and pressure our local government into doing the same. Only a few short years ago there would have been thousands at this event to rally for support and funding. What other sickness has caused our complacency? Where is our sense of community?

If your life has not yet been touched by AIDS, trust me, it will be -- especially with the "no involvement" attitude that seems to prevail here.

Wake up, Dade County! Show a little support for the heroes who are fighting our battle against this killer. Get involved with an AIDS support activity. Case number 10,001 may be someone you love.
