HIV Assistance Center Studies Relocation Sites

The Miami Herald, Inc.; Thursday, December 19, 1991

The future of the Poverello Center -- a Pompano Beach thrift shop and food bank for people infected with the virus that causes AIDS -- seems clearer now that the center's leadership has found several places where the center can move.

Poverello board member Tom Smith said the center is looking at sites in Pompano Beach, Oakland Park and Wilton Manors. The only question now is when the center will move. Condo-vest Inc., which manages the shopping center at McNab and Cypress roads where the center is located, wanted Poverello out last week.

"We're working desperately to find other space. Our attorneys are having meetings with Condovest, and we will try to get an extension," Smith said. "I'm hopeful they'll be sensible when we go in and tell them we're moving but it's just going to take some time. There'll be an awful lot of people at the door if they try to put us out."

Smith said the center could move into the Pompano Beach and Oakland Park sites within two months, but moving to the Wilton Manors site may take at least a month longer.

The Rev. Bill Collins, a Franciscan priest who started the food bank three years ago, originally was told to move the Poverello Center out of the shopping center by Nov. 11, but received an extension so new space could be found. No reason was given for the eviction, which came during negotiations to expand the thrift shop's space in the shopping center.
