Church Center Holding First Seminar

The Miami Herald, Inc.; Thursday, December 12, 1991

The slogan for the Christ Crusade Family Center in Opa-locka reads: A Place of Refuge For All.

On Saturday, the church will put its theme into action with a seminar aimed at the healing and education ministry. It is the first seminar for the center 13720 NW 22nd Ave.

"The purpose of the seminar is to really give a very clear and precise understanding of God so that we can meet the needs of the person," said Pastor Juanita Mincey. Seven speakers from an array of fields will cover topics, including mother-daughter conflict, evolution, AIDS and homosexuality.

Wendell Demeritt, the outreach pastor for the center, said the Christ Crusade Family Center is making a special effort to reach out to AIDS patients. "The rate of AIDS in the black community is humongous," he said. "Someone has to do something, someone has to say something."

Added Mincey: "Even though a person has AIDS, they don't have to give up. Those people need a lot of love and caring and concern."

The Christ Crusade Family Center, a 6-year-old organization with 60 members, also sponsors workshops for people who are HIV positive. The workshops are one of several programs organized by the center.

Other programs include family counseling, two day-care centers, a jail ministry and a food program that feeds 200 families a month.

In addition to the various people scheduled to speak at Saturday's seminar, organizers will present an overview of all the subjects. There will also be a panel discussion, where people in the audience can ask questions. Mincey said the center is also planning follow-up programs to the lectures.

"We just want people to come out and be blessed and receive the information," she said. "By getting the information, they can work through their problems."

The Christ Crusade Family Center is sponsoring a seminar from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at 13720 NW 22nd Ave. Registration fee is $5, and includes lunch. For more information, call 681-2245 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
