Virus Discoverer to Lecture on AIDS Research Progress

Miami Herald; Friday, FRI November 1, 1991
Elinor Burkett, Herald Staff Writer

The discoverer of the human immunodeficiency virus will visit Miami next week to talk about how HIV alone might not cause AIDS after all.

Dr. Luc Montagnier, one of the world's foremost AIDS scientists, and two of his colleagues from the Pasteur Institute will present a trio of lectures on French AIDS research Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Montagnier has been at the forefront of AIDS research since his discovery of HIV. Two years ago, he stunned the scientific community by suggesting that that virus may not be the sole cause of AIDS and that another microbe, a mycoplasma, might be necessary to activate HIV, thus causing illness.

Dr. Marc Girard, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute, will talk about the search for an AIDS vaccine, and Dr. Stratis Avrameas, the institute's director of immunochemistry, will speak on the causes of AIDS dementia.

The Community Alliance Against AIDS is sponsoring Montagnier's visit. The alliance has raised more than $3 million to support AIDS education and research efforts at the University of Miami since 1987.

The Alliance will hold its annual fund-raiser -- "La Fete Francaise: A Paris/Miami Collaboration to Fight AIDS" -- Sunday night at the Hotel Inter-Continental.

"It's a first-time collaboration effort between French and American government offices, researchers, corporations, celebrities and individuals," said Mario Leon, special events coordinator for the alliance.

Carol Lawrence, Veronique Sanson and ballroom dance champions The Savoys will entertain. The House of Nina Ricci will present its fall/winter fashion collection.

La Fete Francaise will be held Sunday at the Hotel Inter-Continental.

* Cocktails will be at 6 p.m., dinner at 7:30.

* Show begins at 9 p.m. and the ball at 10:30 p.m.

* Tickets are $350 and can be reserved by calling 573-3300.

* Monday lectures will be in the second-floor auditorium of the Veterans Administration Hospital, 1201 N.W. 16th St.

* Marc Girard speaks at 9:30 a.m., Stratis Avrameas at 10:30 a.m., Luc Montagnier at noon.
