ASK THE DOC: Breast-feeding a baby requires a major commitment by mom

Miami Herald - MON NOV 26 1990
Neil Solomon, M.D., Herald Columnist Herald Staff

Q. How often must a baby who is being breast-fed be nursed? I am now pregnant and plan to breast-feed the baby if I can. -- Margaret, Orem, Utah A. If they are permitted to do so, breast-fed babies may feed as often as every two hours during most of their first year. If this is very inconvenient, your pediatrician may approve of a schedule that delays feedings for awhile, provided that the baby is growing well. Q. If a man is infected with the virus that causes AIDS, and both he and his wife want to have a child of their own, is there any way that the wife can be inseminated without risk of getting AIDS? -- Mr. and Mrs. G.T., Akron, Ohio. A. There are no hard facts to show that any procedure designed to remove the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from semen can be successful. That does not mean that HIV transmission will always occur during insemination with processed semen. But since no procedure has been proven to remove HIV from semen, no procedure can be considered safe. * Dr. Solomon welcomes letters from readers.
