Leaders urge AIDS tests

Miami Herald - Thursday, MAR 28 1985
Herald Staff

Local gay-rights leaders are urging people who suspect they may have acquired immune deficiency disease to get a blood test called Immune Status Screen.

That test, unlike the one used by blood banks to screen donors, only shows whether a person's immune system is in distress, said Fred Tondalo, who heads a Fort Lauderdale group that sponsors clinics offering the $35 test.

The test is administered in the local clinic by technicians from Metpath laboratories, a Fort Lauderdale company that manufactures the test. A.I.D. Center One, a local center that provides AIDS information and referral, sponsors the testing clinics once a month.

Even though the test does not diagnose AIDS, Tondalo said it is more reliable than the HTLV-III blood-bank test.

A person may get positive results from an Immune Status Screen for reasons other than AIDS. Drinking or using drugs the night before the test or a simple case of the flu can also yield positive results.

A person whose test is positive must take another $110 blood test to find out if he has AIDS, Tondalo said.

For the date, time and location of the next Immune Status Screen clinic, call the center at 467-6551.
