Community News: East EAST LOS ANGELES Health Clinic Takes Step to Sue County

Los Angeles Times (LT) - SUNDAY May 30, 1993 Edition: Home Edition Section: City Times Page: 11 Story Type: Column; Brief Word Count: 258
Mary Anne Perez; Times Staff Writer

Officials of the East Los Angeles Health Task Force last week filed a claim for damages against the county and Sheriff's Department stemming from a March 30 eviction attempt.

Executive director Susan Arellano said the claim is the first step in filing a lawsuit against the county.

In another development, the task force received an order two weeks ago from the county to vacate its 3,100-square-foot space at Centro Maravilla, 4716 E. Brooklyn Ave. The order came after a Superior Court judge blocked the county from removing the clinic from the space it has occupied for 17 years. The county contracts with the East Los Angeles Health Task Force to provide free health exams and medical care for senior citizens.

The county has wanted to move in three other organizations--the Asthma Control and Treatment for Children program, the Los Angeles Youth Conservation Corps and a job-training program--into the office space.

Arellano and about 100 senior citizen clinic clients asked the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to reconsider the order that would have forced the clinic out this week. The board agreed to allow an extra 10 days for the task force and the county to work out a compromise proposal for the clinic space.

Arellano said the task force will propose moving the asthma control program and an HIV-testing program into its office because they would fit well in a health clinic. "We hope it works out," she said.

Lynn Bayer, assistant director of the county's Community and Senior Citizens Services, could not be reached for comment.
