JOHANNESBURG, 24 November (PLUSNEWS) - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), on Wednesday vowed to add its muscle to the fight against HIV/AIDS by joining AIDS lobby group the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC).
"The HIV epidemic has been permitted to go too far. We lament the continued refusal of our national government to declare the seriousness of the epidemic and to mobilise a response on the scale that is needed," Reuters quoted COSATU and the TAC as saying in a joint statement.
COSATU said that union activities over the next year, including its traditional May Day demonstrations and September national congress, would focus on HIV/AIDS and the need to boost both treatment and prevention in the already hard-hit country.
Meanwhile, the South African Council of Churches has also joined COSATU in echoing calls by the TAC that South Africa have at least 200,000 HIV-positive people enrolled for anti-AIDS treatment by 2006.
