JOHANNESBURG (PLUSNEWS) - A new programme under the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief aims to improve blood transfusion safety in African and Caribbean countries heavily affected by HIV and AIDS.
As part of the $2.4 million initiative the US-based blood research organisation, BloodSource, and a number of other international organisations will spend the next five years working to make the blood supply safe in Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, and Guyana in South America.
Christopher Gresens, medical director of BloodSource's clinical services, noted that the blood supply in parts of Africa and the Caribbean was only marginally safe.
"This is an opportunity to provide hope for more than 100 million people," Gresens said in a statement.
