JOHANNESBURG (PLUSNEWS) - South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on Thursday announced an increase in the number of people on anti-AIDS therapy in accredited government facilities.

This year's treatment number is said to be up from 11,250 at the end of August to more than 19,000 by October this year.

According to Tshabalala-Msimang, the increase was part of the steady progress her department has been making in implementing the national comprehensive plan for the management, care, and treatment of people with HIV and AIDS.

The South African Press Association quoted the health minister as saying: "Treatment is already available in at least one facility in 50 of the 53 districts in the country. A total of 103 facilities have been accredited, and are providing care and treatment for people with HIV/AIDS."
