Uganda to Accelerate AIDS Vaccine Research

UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - September 8, 2001

Uganda and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) announced last week that they would work together to accelerate the development and testing of three potential AIDS vaccines, Reuters reported.

"We are excited that the Ugandan government has chosen to collaborate with IAVI," Seth Berkley, president and CEO of IAVI, said in the statement. "Uganda has shown genuine leadership and commitment in confronting this epidemic." As part of their agreement, IAVI, will work with the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) to evaluate new AIDS vaccines and help Ugandan scientists play an active part in vaccine research and development, according to the IAVI statement. IAVI will also help strengthen Uganda's clinical trial infrastructure to prepare for vaccine effectiveness tests of new vaccines.

The IAVI and UVRI partnership will begin by continuing the tests of two vaccines developed by the Medical Research Council at Oxford University in the UK and researchers from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. These two vaccines, are based on HIV subtype A, the most common HIV strain in East Africa. The third candidate is an oral vaccine planned for phase I human testing in the US and Uganda, also based on subtype A. IAVI is funding the development of all three vaccines.
