Crucial Role For Visiting Nurses

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - May 28, 1998

Representatives from the Red Cross Societies of Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and Russia gathered in Minsk last week to discuss plans to fight the devastating spread of infectious diseases in these countries.

They were joined by colleagues from Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States as well as from the WHO and UNICEF.

"There is a definite link between these diseases'", said Dr Gizaw Getachew, Senior Officer, Communicable Diseases at the FederationSecretariat. "By 2020, 25% of deaths from tuberculosis will be linked to HIV/Aids - and it is mainly the young people who will die."

Hosted by the Belarussian Red Cross and the Federation, the meeting focused on strengthening Red Cross youth HIV/Aids prevention programmes, through peer education and promotion of a healthy lifestyle, and also the long-established Red Cross visiting nurse service including support for expanded training for and recruitment of nurses.

It is hoped that the home care and medical assistance the nurses provide to lonely, elderly people as well as to the disabled will be extended to tuberculosis and Aids patients.

"In 1996, we agreed that support for visiting nurses should be a priority," said Michael Schulz, Desk Officer for Europe at the Federation Secretariat. "We want to attract backing from governments and international agencies - we need help to fight this battle!"
