International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent Societies - October 27, 1997
Twelve National Societies are attending this important event, which followed the 7th ART meeting (Asian Red Cross and Red Crescent Aids Task Force), convened just before the congress began.
TEN innovative Red Cross and Red Crescent projects from the region are being presented to 2,000 international experts gathered in Philippines' capital, including the Vietnamese Red Cross 'rice bowl model', the Lao Red Cross audio-visual education materials, and the Cambodian Red Cross survey results on sexual knowledge, attitudes and behaviour.
The Vietnamese Red Cross 'rice-bowl model' is a concept to teach and encourage young people to run AIDS-education workshops in their own communities.
The Lao audio-visual slides and video were produced after extensive interviews with groups and individuals on how best to communicate vital messages on HIV and STD prevention. The resulting content emphasises peer support, community understanding, and has a special emphasis on how women can negotiate safer sex practices.
The Cambodian survey used professional sampling, assessment and interview techniques, combined with accepted statistical methods. Subsequent research findings have proved to be a strong influence on AIDS education and care programmes.
It was found that, while basic knowledge of sexually communicable diseases is high, detailed preventative information is limited. There is now more emphasis on building greater awareness of the choices that can be made towards changing life-threatening behaviours.
