Condomania: The South African Catholic Bishops' Conference said the use of condoms could be one of the main reasons for the spread of HIV, and promoting their use was immoral and misguided. The conference did not make a definitive announcement on the use of condoms by serodiscordant married couples. Some bishops have said it should be allowed in that situation.
Lost teachers: An international confederation of teaching unions has warned that Aids is affecting teachers more than other professionals and threatens to wipe out the profession in Africa within a decade. In Botswana up to 40% of secondary school teachers are HIV-positive.
